Many applicants live in rural areas with limited 3G or mobile internet speeds. Uploading multi-megabyte files can lead to network timeouts and incomplete submissions. A 20KB image uploads instantly even on slow connections. Furthermore, government agents scanning these files can query and load applicant folders within seconds.

3. Security and Standardized Cropping

By restricting the upload size and file formats, portals filter out unoptimized scripts and prevent malicious scripts embedded inside large image binaries. It also enforces standard cropping and framing, ensuring that the profile photos fit neatly on official admit cards and registers.
