WebP vs JPEG: Which Format Offers the Best Compression at Tiny Sizes?

As visual web development moves towards modern formats, WebP has become a staple for developers looking to accelerate initial page speed loads. But does WebP outperform JPEG when compressing to tiny limits like 20KB?

1. Lossless vs Lossy WebP

WebP is an extremely versatile format. It supports both lossless compression (similar to PNG) and lossy compression (similar to JPEG). At 20KB limits, lossless WebP will generally fail because the raw byte data of color charts cannot fit. Lossy WebP, however, achieves up to 30% higher compression efficiency than JPEG, meaning it can compress a slightly larger resolution into the same 20KB footprint.

2. Portal Support Issues

While WebP is supported by all modern web browsers, many older database administration panels, government verification portals, and PDF parsers do not support WebP files. 3. Compression Artifacts
